Challenges

Inspiring the world from 4K feet

In 2018, when I finally graduated from nearly 600 days of rehabilitation in various hospitals, my family and I moved to a charming small town in New Hampshire. As I settled in, one of my biggest concerns was whether I could continue with the physical and occupational therapy that had become an essential part of my life, as I had been attending sessions six days a week.

The main challenge I faced was getting to the outpatient physical therapy hospital, which was located 30 minutes away from my new home. With my partner, Michelle, working full-time, we knew this would pose a significant hurdle for us.

Fortunately, my sister took it upon herself to do some research and stumbled upon an incredible service called Cart, run by the Manchester Transit Authority in southern New Hampshire. This public bus service provided round-trip transportation at a very reasonable cost, catering to anyone in need.

During my initial rides on Cart, I had the pleasure of meeting Stephen, one of their drivers. Right from day one, Stephen's infectious positivity brightened my day. Our conversations spanned a wide range of topics, from sports and politics to daily news and investing. He was a true joy to be around.

To me, Stephen was more than just a driver who took me from point A to point B; he became an invaluable partner in my recovery journey. His cheerful demeanor and engaging discussions made each trip an uplifting experience.

Unfortunately, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to take hold, outpatient rehab services were temporarily shut down. As a result, I had to rely on in-home occupational and physical therapy, which meant no more rides with Stephen.

Several weeks later, I received heartbreaking news that Stephen had contracted COVID-19. He faced severe side effects that ultimately led to a double amputation below his right knee and the loss of half his left foot.

Although I was deeply saddened by the news, I knew Stephen possessed an unwavering determination to overcome any challenge. With the help of prosthetics and his unwavering commitment, he managed to reclaim his love for the great outdoors, specifically hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Remarkably, he has already conquered an impressive 24 out of the 48 4000-footers!

Stephen's tenacity and resilience are truly inspiring. He has set himself the Joe Sharron Challenge, aiming to conquer the remaining 24 Mountains and earn his well-deserved patch, joining the ranks of an elite fraternity of hikers from around the world. As an added dream, Stephen also contemplates hiking the legendary Appalachian Trail one day.

Stephen, you are an absolute inspiration! Keep up the incredible work, and who knows, maybe one day you'll spot me by your side, as we make our way from the parking lot to the summit of one of those majestic 4000-footers!
