Three Days of Freedom: My Experience at the Spinal Cord Injury Ski Camp in Bretton Woods

For three unforgettable days, I had the opportunity to experience that freedom at the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Ski Camp hosted by New England Disabled Sports (NEDS) at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. With the help of incredible instructors like Kurtis, Vance, Dominic, Jessica, Bob and Paul, adaptive technology, and a community of supportive athletes, I took on the slopes using the TetraSki, a revolutionary piece of adaptive ski equipment designed for individuals with limited upper body mobility.

A Camp Like No Other
The SCI Ski Camp isn’t just about skiing—it’s about empowerment, connection, and pushing boundaries. Organized by NEDS, this camp brings together individuals with spinal cord injuries for three days of adaptive skiing, skill development, and camaraderie. Bretton Woods, with its stunning White Mountain backdrop, provided the perfect setting for this adventure.

From the moment I arrived, the energy was electric. Participants of all levels—some trying skiing for the first time and others returning for another season—came together with one goal: to experience the joy of the mountains. The dedicated team at NEDS made sure that every aspect of the experience was tailored to our individual needs, ensuring safety while maximizing fun.

The Game-Changer: TetraSki
My time on the mountain was made possible by the TetraSki, an innovative sit-ski that allows individuals with limited or no upper body function to control their turns and speed using a joystick or breath control system. Developed at the University of Utah, the TetraSki is a game-changer in adaptive sports, offering unparalleled independence on the slopes.

For someone like me, who has a spinal cord injury that affects my upper and lower body, traditional mono-skis would be impossible. But with the TetraSki, I had full control over my descent, allowing me to carve turns and navigate the mountain in a way I never thought possible. The first run was exhilarating—feeling the snow beneath me, steering with precision, and gaining confidence with each turn.

More Than Just Skiing
While skiing was the highlight, the camp was about more than just time on the slopes. The days were filled with opportunities to connect with other participants, share stories, and learn from one another.

Beyond that, the supportive atmosphere made all the difference. Everyone—from the instructors to fellow skiers—was there to encourage, challenge, and celebrate each other’s successes. Whether it was conquering a new trail or simply getting comfortable with adaptive equipment, every milestone was met with cheers and virtual high-fives.

The Takeaway
Leaving Bretton Woods, I carried with me more than just great memories. I left with a renewed sense of confidence, a deeper appreciation for adaptive sports, and a reminder that my injury does not define my capabilities. Thanks to the incredible work of New England Disabled Sports and the technology of the TetraSki, I experienced a level of freedom and independence that I will carry with me long after the snow melts.

For anyone with a spinal cord injury looking to experience the thrill of skiing, I can’t recommend this camp enough. Whether you’re a first-time skier or a seasoned athlete, NEDS and the SCI Ski Camp at Bretton Woods will provide you with the tools, support, and community to make it an unforgettable adventure.
